I don't know what it is, had never touched the end until I read your question and it happened to me too. I can tell you, though, that it kept my daughter in law from buying a new lens. She dropped hers on concrete and it left a bad mark. I grabbed my pen and used the black part with an eraser motion, used the brush, and it was like new again,
