While the design of the product is exceptional, it is definitely an eye catcher, I can say for almost certain it takes away from the sound quality of the device. I am no audiophile but orienting the speakers horizontally clearly takes away from the volume of the speakers and in my opinion also the sound quality.When you think about what is happening when you switch from a vertical to horizontal arrangement of the homepod speakers, it is different from what happens with standard forward facing speakers (lets say sonos play 5). With standard forward facing speakers, switching arrangements from vertical to horizontal still leads to the speakers facing forward, but with the homepod and its 360 degree facing speakers when you switch from vertical to horizontal, the speakers no longer face forward but instead some of the tweeters will face toward the ceiling which I don't think is good for the acoustics.
