I would say better than middle road...
Being unhappy with my first choice, KGUARD SecurityInc. SHA24 Series 8-Channel H.264 DVR Home Security Surveillance DVR (see my review), I decided to give this unit a go. I would say it is a true high def recorder based upon a test record of a 1080 video source. It is capable of a higher resolution than my 1200tvl cameras will require, but the hdmi output will provide a cleaner output signal for viewing. The menu is very nice but cumbersome to nav. with the remote but a breeze with the mouse. Motion sensitivity is very sensitive to the point it detects shadows. I'm not yet finished with the networking and tweaking but so far the system is very stable and is everything else it claims to be. I really would like to turn off the video loss alarm but have not figured it out yet. Will update upon completion.Sorry update took so long. Customer service was on point with my issues. Contacted me immediately by email and know their product.P.S.Cables mean everything...By JoeVerified PurchaseThis review is from: 4 Pairs (8 pcs) BNC to RJ45 Video Balun CCTV PTZ Camera with Power Connector (Electronics)After an exhausting amount of research and different camera/recorder combinations, bnc cables and power supplies, I have finally put together my own 8 channel 5 camera HD network home surveillance system for around $500. The use of these balluns with cat 5 is the final piece of the perfect security system puzzle. The use of these balluns and cat 5 cable has reduced any remaining ground loop, RF or high frequency noise that was assumed to be caused by several other sources. Plus cat 5 wire is much cheaper than bnc cable. I wish someone would have told me this from the beginning. Hope this info helps someone avoid the hassle of learning the hard way

major problems with the software, cameras cut out out of no where but are still recording, can't use any of the menu settings with the boxes mouse or remote control, the only way i can change anything is remotely thru a computer or my phone and still have a lot of camera drop outs.

Worked simply right out of the box. Slap a hard drive in it and you're ready to go. I don't know about longevity yet but will try tp update as time passes.

it is way better than the two Zmodo's i had previously
I use to use a Zmodo dvr. But it was so out of date even after i purchased a new one. This was cheap enough and had decent reviews and i must say, it is way better than the two Zmodo's i had previously. Way better firmware. More user friendly interface. I was able to get the Ip Camera Viewer app to work with this model even though its not listed. I had to use Zmodo H9106UV w/ Client Port. I tried a lot of the different models on Ip Cam Viewer, and this was the only model to work. If you want to view your cameras outside your network. You have to set up a ddns on your router, and point it to your client port on your dvr. There are a few free ddns out there.

DVR is ok but manual sucks.
Just got the dvr...first like everyone says, the manual sucks. We don't have the system installed yet, but wanted to tell you one of the most important things about this dvr, when you install your hard drive, YOU HAVE TO FORMAT IT, they don't tell you this until the middle of the (so-called) manual. The system will do this for you, just go thru the menu section. Second, the most important thing about this box is a magic phone number and a guy named George. The phone # is 408-736-3070. Ask for George he is beyond helpful. Without this guy, we were ready to send the dvr back because of the manual.
